Mark your calendars for a series of Web Forums describing the changes to the WIC food packages and exploring ways to support and partner with local WIC programs to maximize the health benefits of these historic reforms.

  • Speakers will go over the details of the WIC food package changes and how they will be implemented in California on October 1, 2009.
  • Local WIC agencies, public health experts, and community advocates will share best practices and resources that can be used to Make Change Matter in your community!
  • Available resources for further information will be shared, and questions will be answered in an interactive format.
  • Participants will also find out how they can help promote these healthy food changes with the families they serve, using materials based on the Sesame Street Healthy Habits for Life campaign.

WIC Food Changes for Emergency Food Providers and Anti-Hunger Advocates

The new WIC Food Packages provide a healthy bag of groceries. This webinar will review the basic changes and assist emergency food providers and hunger advocates in understanding the process and timeline for implementation. Speakers will also share examples and suggestions for how providers can support local WIC agencies in outreach and education to needy families during the transition.

Early Childhood Providers and Advocates

WIC serves many thousands of kids under five, and the foods we provide to this important group are about to get a lot better! Find out about the new baby foods, whole grains, soy foods, and fruits and vegetables that will help WIC toddlers develop healthy tastes that will last a lifetime. Early childhood providers and advocates can help WIC “broadcast” fun and simple health messages to the families you serve, using the Sesame-WIC Healthy Habits for Life campaign. WIC Food Changes for Neighborhood Food Advocates: Grocery and Farmer’s Market Partnerships

The new WIC food packages provide for a wider variety of foods including, for the first time, fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains. With the buying power of nearly 1.5 million WIC participants, this represents an opportunity for California grocers and farmers to tap new markets! Find out about local efforts to leverage the WIC rollout to increase healthy food access for more low-income shoppers in neighborhoods or small towns that might otherwise be considered “food deserts.”

WIC Food Changes for Breastfeeding and
Early Feeding Providers

Co-sponsored by Maternal and Child Health Access, Maternal Child and Adolescent Health, CA Dept. of Public Health, MCAH Action, California Breastfeeding Coalition

California’s implementation of the new WIC food regulations will result in enhanced support for exclusive breastfeeding, and major changes to the provision of infant formula for moms who decide to bottle feed. This session will provide a glimpse of WIC’s comprehensive new program entitled Healthy Habits Begin at Birth, which will assist parents in understanding how to read their babies cues for optimum early feeding.

WIC Food Changes for Medical and Nursing Care Providers

Co-sponsored by California Primary Care Association, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, California Medical Association Foundation, American Academy of Pediatrics - CA

Find out exactly how the new WIC food packages are designed to meet the guidelines recommended by the IOM and the AAP for the WIC population. Providers will be asked to help WIC meet federal requirements for medical documentation for some of the new foods and special formulas, especially for women and children with particular health care needs – get a “heads up” here.
