Job Summary: Under the supervision of the WIC Program Director, is responsible for daily operations of WIC services according to Camino Health Center and State WIC Branch policies. Provide High Risk nutrition counseling and other direct client services as needed. Refer participants in need of Medical Nutrition Therapy to their health care provider. Provide direct supervision of paraprofessional staff. Assist the WIC Program Director with the development, implementation, and evaluation of nutrition and breastfeeding promotion activities, quality assurance, referral and outreach activities, and other duties as assigned.

The WIC Supervising Nutritionist is an active member of the Management Team.

Essential Functions:

Nutrition Education & Breastfeeding Support

  • Provide education and guidance on nutrition and health-related behaviors. Identify each participant’s age-specific needs.
  • Develop and implement individual education plans for participants, referring to medical providers when indicated.
  • Assist participants in setting health-related goals.
  • For high-risk participants, adopt and reinforce the Nutrition Care Plan developed by the MNT Registered Dietitian and modify the WIC food package accordingly.
  • Promote breastfeeding as the preferred method of infant feeding, demonstrating competencies as outlined in “Using Loving Support to Grow & Glow in WIC”.
  • Determine eligibility for and issue electric breast pumps.

Daily Operations

  • Responsible for the daily operations of WIC services according to Camino Health Center and State WIC Branch policies.
  • Assume full responsibility of the WIC Program in the absence of the WIC Director.
  • Oversee client and staff schedules to ensure appropriate and adequate staff-to-caseload ratio.
  • Assist WNA staff in determining applicants’/participants’ eligibility for program benefits.
  • Support the efficient flow of participants through the WIC office.
  • Ensure decisions are elevated to the appropriate level.
  • Resolve participant complaints as needed to promote a customer friendly work environment.
  • Provide services using the Participant Centered Education (PCE) model.

Supervision of Paraprofessional Staff

  • Provide direct supervision to paraprofessional staff.
  • Provide recommendations in the hiring process of new staff.
  • Evaluate staff performance against job description criteria and competency assessment.  Help others understand how their roles and actions contribute to the organization.
  • Conduct ongoing quality assurance activities to assure compliance with Camino Health Center and State WIC Program Policies and assure staff are carrying out the core values of Camino Health Center.
  • Ensure accuracy in timekeeping and monthly time studies as mandated by the state. Monitor PTO usage.
  • Create an atmosphere of trust and growth by providing feedback, coaching, and recognition to others.

Staff Training and Development

  • Assist with training of new WIC employees.
  • Work alongside the Program Assistant to determine the on-going training needs of paraprofessional staff.
  • Assist WIC Director with the development and implementation of the Nutrition Services Plan (NSP).
    Assist with the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of nutrition and breastfeeding education activities.

WIC Client Services

  • Screen and verify applicants’/participants’ income, residency, indicators of nutritional need, and identification for program eligibility.  Input data into the WIC Web Information System Exchange (WIC WISE).
  • Make decisions to certify or disqualify applicants and participants based on eligibility requirements.
  • Prepare, tailor, void, and reissue food benefits as appropriate.  Orient WIC Participants on WIC-allowable foods and how to use the food benefits.
  • Assess the immunization history of children and refer under-immunized children to an appropriate health care provider.
  • Communicate with health care providers as needed to obtain nutrition related information.
  • Ensure Supervisor is made aware of any potential client grievances or risk events.
  • Complete participant transfers.

WIC Outreach and Referrals

  • Provide outreach activities and maintenance of caseload goals as directed.
  • Refer applicants/participants to available support resources such as health care services, emergency food, substance abuse interventions, family support services, and other appropriate services.
  • Coordinate access and referral to specialized health care or social services when necessary.
  • Assist in community nutrition education activities as requested.
  • Develop an understanding of the programs and patient services offered by Camino Health Center by participating in in-services and other activities and share that information with community partners and staff.
  • Contribute to the success of Camino Health Center by making appropriate referrals to the medical, behavioral health, and dental programs.

Minimum Position Qualifications: 

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition or other Health Science
  • Experience / Training: Experience in nutrition education and interventions
  • License / Certification: Valid CA driver’s license.

Preferred Position Qualifications: 

  • Experience / Training: Experience working for WIC or another community/public health program. Supervisory experience. Bilingual (English/Spanish).  Lactation Education training.  Motivational Interviewing Training.
  • License / Certification: Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics membership. Current CDR with Commission on Dietetic Registration.
