Breastfeeding is a universally recognized, cost-effective practice that benefits the health of both mothers and babies while lowering healthcare expenses.
California Data
In California, sustained efforts have led to significant increases in exclusive in-hospital breastfeeding rates, particularly among women of color. However, since hospitals may be the only places where mothers can access skilled support, many mothers struggle to meet their breastfeeding goals after they leave. Support must continue beyond the hospital walls.
What is needed?
Continuous resources and encouragement from healthcare providers, family, friends, employers, childcare professionals, and the community are essential. Mothers and babies need a supportive network to embark on and sustain healthy lives together.
