The current number is below the Surgeon General’s recommendation, and with the California law requiring hospitals to adopt hospital breastfeeding policies by 2025, the number of IBCLCs needed could increase.

CWA offers an overview to better understand the cost to become an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) for employment in the California Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and Public Health.

The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) establishes the requirements for becoming an IBCLC. There are three pathways to meet the requirements to apply to take the IBCLC exam. They are outlined in the following report.
