As of October 1, 2025, when the federal government entered a shutdown, there has understandably been concern among families, providers, and advocates about how nutrition programs will be affected. The good news: in California, WIC is open and operating — and eligible families should continue to use their benefits, attend appointments, and apply if they’re new.
What you need to know
- Participants should continue to use their WIC food benefits at authorized stores, keep using the California WIC App, and attend scheduled WIC appointments.
- The program is operating under available funds and contingency arrangements, but there is still uncertainty if the shutdown is prolonged.
What you can do
- If you’re a WIC participant: Use your benefits, attend your appointments, and if your household income has changed (for example, due to a furlough), contact your WIC local agency to see if you are eligible.
- If you’re a provider or advocate: Keep communicating to clients that WIC is open, update local agencies’ websites/social media with this message, and monitor for any official changes.
- Stay informed: Visit the WIC website for the latest updates.
